A vast lava field of pahoehoe and cinder cones along the Great Rift. Young basalt — some flows only two thousand years old — black as a night sea.
Astronauts trained here. The Loop Road threads cinder cones and frozen rivers of rock. Evening makes the lava glow like coals. Sage and limber pine are slowly reclaiming the edges.
