The bench around it is bentonite and ash, striped like a map. Factory Butte is the landmark. Caineville and the Moonscape Overlook sit in the same empty. Hanksville is the last gas.

Factory Butte is a red-capped mesa standing over gray Mancos shale on Factory Bench, west of Hanksville. Bentonite and ash stripe the flats around it; Caineville and the Moonscape Overlook sit in the same empty — the Moonscape is its own plate on the bench, not this butte. The landform belongs to this bench, not to Capitol Reef’s Waterpocket Fold.
