Landform

A 14,309-foot block of San Juan rock. Broad, massive, and unlike the horned peaks around it.

Field note

Uncompahgre is the highest of the San Juans. From Nellie Creek the west face is a wall. Wetterhorn next door is the sharp one; this peak is a fortress. The name is Ute — hot water spring.
