Crimson sedimentary hills and grassland where the Laramie Foothills meet the plains — not the volcanic Red Mountain Pass above Ouray.
The trailhead sits on the Wyoming line. Crimson beds rise out of grass, and a red-cliff amphitheater holds a stand of cottonwoods. This is Larimer County open space, not the iron-stained San Juan pass.
