Landform

America’s first national forest — designated in 1891. Volcanic Absaroka peaks, the Clarks Fork canyon, and lodgepole and spruce on the eastern door of Yellowstone.

Field note

Benjamin Harrison set this land aside as the Yellowstone Park Timber Land Reserve. Wapiti Valley and the North Fork Shoshone still feel like the park’s quieter twin. Francs Peak and the Absarokas wall the sky.
