The largest national park in the United States. Root Glacier and the Kennicott Glacier are walked from Kennecott; the St. Elias ice is beyond.
Field note
The National Park Service administers Wrangell–St. Elias, the largest national park in the United States, more than 13 million acres. From Kennecott, a walk reaches the Root Glacier; the Kennicott Glacier fills the valley below the old copper mill. The McCarthy Road is a long gravel road from Chitina, not a fast highway. Mount St. Elias stands at 18,008 feet on the border. Glacier Bay is a different ice plate, on the water.
