A weathered bristlecone under Wheeler Peak

Fig. 1A weathered bristlecone under Wheeler Peak

Landform

A lonely sky-island range rising from the sage basin. Bristlecone groves, a rock glacier, and Wheeler Peak at 13,065 feet.

Field note

Great Basin bristlecones live more than four thousand years on dry, windy ridges. Nights here are among the darkest in the country. The park is far from everywhere on purpose.

Great Basin

More alpine in Nevada: Ruby Mountains, Angel Lake, Arc Dome.
