The largest tallgrass restoration east of the Mississippi, on the old Joliet Army Ammunition Plant.
Midewin is a Forest Service prairie, not a farm. Goldenrod and big bluestem fill the old production grounds. From Explosives Road the restored grass runs under a working Midwest sky. Chicago is an hour north; the horizon still feels like the plains.
