Unplowed tallgrass on the Flint Hills — big bluestem, Indian grass, and wildflowers under a low Kansas horizon.
Field note
The preserve holds a last remnant of the tallgrass that once covered the eastern plains. Fall sage and yellow forbs stand in the blades; after rain the hills go emerald under a working sky. Bison graze the uplands. Strong City is the nearest town. Hidden caption or not, this is prairie — mixed grass and flowers, not a wheat hill and not a hayfield.
