Landform

The great river swamp of the Atchafalaya: bald cypress and water tupelo on a Mississippi distributary.

Field note

The Atchafalaya Basin is the Mississippi's major distributary swamp in south-central Louisiana. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge inside it, beside Sherburne Wildlife Management Area. Bald cypress and water tupelo stand in the backwaters. Caddo Lake, on another plate, is the cypress on the Texas line, not this basin.
