White sand at Gulf Islands National Seashore
Landform
Barrier islands of white quartz sand. Horn and Petit Bois are wilderness; Ship Island holds Fort Massachusetts. The seashore also includes a Florida district.
Field note
The National Park Service administers Gulf Islands National Seashore in Mississippi and Florida. This plate is centered on the Mississippi islands: Ship Island and Fort Massachusetts, with Horn Island and Petit Bois Island as designated wilderness. The sand is quartz and bright. A ferry reaches Ship Island in season from Gulfport. The Florida forts are the same seashore, another shore.
